Discipline & ANARCHY: Morenike Vincent

Morenike Vincent is an Italo-Nigerian musician, singer and composer born in Ireland, but raised in Rome. Classically trained in piano for ten years and in cello, Morenike later studied jazz vocals at the conservatory. Unable to find the musical space she was looking for in Italy, she decided to move to Paris, where she is developing her musical project in collaboration with Marc Collin. Her artistic journey is rooted in a deep sense of cultural hybridity and existential displacement, anD unfolds as a continuous search for identity, desire, isolation and belonging.

WHY DO YOU DO IT? WHAT DRIVES YOU?

I make art because I genuinely enjoy it, and there are not many things in this world that I truly enjoy. Playing with my friends makes me very happy. I also love the idea of transmuting difficult situations into something beautiful, transforming pain into something that can bring pleasure.

WHAT IS THE SCRAPPIEST THING YOU’VE DONE FOr money?

Every experience has taught me something. Before moving to Paris, I worked in a shop. For me, it is very difficult to see so many humans in one day. I am introverted. By the end of the day I always felt drained and exhausted. I am shy, so having to speak with so many people required a huge effort. I am not used to seeing that many faces and constantly interacting with them. I deeply respect people who do these kinds of jobs. Many customers can be extremely rude, and it takes almost shamanic patience not to tell them to fuck off.

YOUR TASK IS TO PRESCRIBE ONE BOOK OR FILM TO THE COLLECTIVE. WHAT IS IT?

Book: RACISM EXPLAINED TO MY DAUGHTER by Tahar Ben Jelloun
Movie: PRINCESS MONONOKE by Hayao Miyazaki

Current obsession?

Pirates. I just watched PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN for the first time, which is kind of crazy, right? I also love sailors. I like to think of ships as houses moving across an unpredictable sea that represents life. I often feel like that myself.

MOST USEFUL FAILURE?

My most useful failure has been every time I did not follow my instinct, every time I trusted others more than I trusted myself. Now I almost always follow my inner voice, or at least I try to. My life is chaotic, full and intense, but also very deep. No month is the same as the next, and every year feels like ten.

SELECTED Q FROM THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE: What is your motto?

"Perfection is also about letting go."

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

New music. And new places to see. I hope.

DISCIPLINE OR ANARCHY?

Anarchy. But for me, anarchy means self discipline. I give myself my own rules, so I do not need to receive them from others, especially when I consider them unfair. Freedom is everything, but it also means not being a slave to yourself or to your impulsive or negative instincts. The first rule is not to harm, neither others nor ourselves, because when you hurt yourself you are still hurting a living being. If you do not take care of yourself, you cannot take care of others.
