Discipline & ANARCHY: Olivia Drusin

Olivia Drusin is a New York-based painter whose works critically engage with the psychological dimensions of public and private spaces through a perceptual lens. Her work meticulously dissects the banalities of everyday life, exposing the latent disquietude that permeates seemingly mundane encounters. Drusin's paintings traverse the intersection of the ordinary and the uncanny, manifesting as stark, reductive representations of thresholds and obscured moments that invite a deeper contemplation of the intersections between sight, space, and psychological engagement.

WHY DO YOU DO IT? WHAT DRIVES YOU?

No idea, it’s probably a compulsion. I know I likely couldn’t do anything else.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU DO FOR SANITY MAINTENANCE?

I watch bad TV.

WHAT IS THE SCRAPPIEST THING YOU’VE DONE FOr money?

I’m not sure! I started cold emailing people for jobs I was definitely not qualified to have when I was like 16. I’ve rented paintings to film sets, worked 14 hour install days…

YOUR TASK IS TO PRESCRIBE ONE BOOK OR FILM TO THE COLLECTIVE. WHAT IS IT?

THE NO TEXTS by Steven Parrino.

Current obsession?

My miniature poodle puppy, Milosz.

MOST USEFUL FAILURE?

Any sort of rejection is a necessary form of redirection, especially if you’re doing anything creative. Anything I’ve wanted to accomplish badly enough usually happens, but not in the timeline that I initially hoped.

SELECTED Q FROM THE PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE: When and where were you happiest?

Who knows. Happiness is relative and is a constant moving target.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I’m currently working on my next show, which will be a two person exhibition with sculptor Steph Gonzalez-Turner at International Waters in Brooklyn. The space is a loading dock that was built more to fulfill a requirement for the building and less so to be used as a loading dock. I’m in the process of making two 7’x 8’ paintings for our show.

DISCIPLINE OR ANARCHY?

Discipline.
